Sponsored by the Grosse Pointe Artists Association, Grosse Pointe War Memorial, and Grosse Pointe Brokers Association, Minoru Yamasaki was one of the most notable guest lecturers to present among a history of Detroit Institute of Art curators and contemporary artists. The architect is best known for his design of the World Trade Center in New York (destroyed September 11, 2001); however, in 1954, he was on the cusp of a remarkable 30 year journey and successful career of design.
Detroit’s One Woodward Ave and Wayne State University’s Prentis Hall, DeRoy Auditorium, and McGregor Conference Center are local examples that display the architect’s innovative intent of “dignified and elegant” architecture designed to evoke surprise, serenity and delight.
